Does Your Inner Brat Lurk Beyond Halloween?

Just seemed so appropriate for Halloween and various other themes in the air these days. I’ve been catching up on old horror flicks with friends and family, introducing legendary movies like Amityville Horror, Exorcist, and such to the kids.
Inevitably, conversation wandered from the usual questions about ghosts to more complicated topics about demons, spirits, and possession. How to discuss such abstract subjects with impressionable minds. I turned to several of my smartest gurus to get their opinions. I so love how there is a never a dull conversation with my friends.
For the purposes of this blog post, I’ll focus on a portion of the convo that had more to do with real life anger, sadness, and pain–moods that can make people act and even feel possessed. I’m no expert on this particular matter, but I remain a steadfast student. I learned that our expressions of anger may be rooted in a past experience or memory. It may be a memory from your childhood or even a past life.
Consider the moments when you are most angry, frustrated, irritated, impatient, or ready to pounce on anyone who gets in your way. Where does that come from? What transpired to give you such a deep feeling of insecurity? To trigger your fight or flight response? Maybe you think your road rage is too trivial to apply to this model, but if you dig a little deeper, you may be surprised. You may be driven to anger by a desire for revenge.
Sometimes an “unconscious pattern of revenge” is just a silent wish to see someone get pay-back, hoping that the one who caused pain will get hurt in the end. Sometimes revenge is just an urge to keep your mouth shut when you could to redress a wrong. It can be very subtle, rooted deep in a childhood insecurity, but revenge often accompanies anger.
It’s perfectly okay, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just something to observe, and if you feel so inclined, to go back and heal. These days, almost everyone has a blemish in their past. Whether it be divorce, abuse, neglect, instability, or perhaps being bullied, lied to, or manipulated, disappointment happens and life gets complicated.
If you feel a strong sense of anger or just general negativity surrounding you, get to know your first chakra and rewrite some of those contracts you made with yourself when you were hurt or disappointed. You may have wanted to take revenge, and you may not have even been aware of it at the time. But now when you feel slighted by another driver on the road, a waiter, or even a family member, your feelings of way back when could be triggered and the next thing you know, you’re steeped in anger or spite even though the incident you are experiencing may not warrant such a reaction.
Your inner “demons,” as we sometimes call them, come up to protect you from perceived harm. Those demons are more like an inner child who needs to relearn trust and security. Your chakras are another tool for you to become the person you are meant to be. Do you really want to be defined by your past? Do you really want to allow negativity from within hold you back and attract more negativity? You’re working so hard to love, why stay shackled to your past when your future is waiting for you!
