Feng Shui and the Color Orange

If you feel that using the color red is just to vivid for you to use in your home or office, you may want to consider using shades of orange or yellow as you apply the principles of Feng Shui to your décor.

Orange is often referred to as “the social color” since it carries the Feng Shui energy encouraging animated conversation and enjoyment.  During the winter months it brings back memories of summertime adventures. Every shade of orange is abundantly displayed in the trees shedding their leaves during autumn. We can’t help but be warmed by the splendor of this color seen everywhere in nature.

In Feng Shui each color expresses one of the five elements, which means there are certain guidelines that should be followed in using each color in creating positive Feng Shui energy in any room or space.

Orange represents the fire element in Feng Shui therefore the guidelines must take into consideration how this element might interact with the other elements in a particular area of your home or office.

Using the color orange can promote positive Feng Shui in certain areas of your life:

  • If you are seeking to establish a good reputation and even fame, you should use orange freely.
  • If you want to find love and marriage, orange can create the kind of energy that will attract love and romance.
  • If you are trying to grow spiritually and gain in self understanding to expand your horizons, the Feng Shui energy from orange can promote this.

As you sit in front of your fireplace in winter you see that vibrant color orange is already alive in your home. In Feng Shui a flickering of warm orange is a welcome presence in the center of a home since the energy of fire nourishes the element of earth in this particular area.

The dominant element in the western part of any room or space is metal. To achieve positive Feng Shui, you naturally seek to nurture the main element dominating each bagua area. Since Fire melts metal, it stands to reason that fire is the stronger element. Therefore the use of the color orange should be limited in the western part of a home or office.

This Feng Shui principle carries over to the east and southeast areas of your home where the wood element dominates. Fire burns and destroys wood, so it should be used with caution in these areas.

This is not to say you should totally avoid decorating with orange in those areas! You can certainly place a gorgeous orange accessory like a vase or picture frame in the western part of your home, or a couple of orange flowerpots by the main entrance that faces east. Just be careful so that orange is not the prominent color in these particular areas.

The energy of orange in Feng Shui is vibrant and happy so it makes a perfect choice to use in the living and dining areas of your home. It’s also great for decorating the kitchen or the playroom where your kids spend time. Wherever you seek to create a lively, playful, vibrant energy in your home, think orange. Because it is such a vivid color you may accomplish this by decorating with Feng Shui with just one orange wall or with decorative accessories.

Because there are so many shades of orange, from very soft to vividly bright, which are affected by the sun and the time of day it shines through the windows, orange is a Feng Shui color that is very easy to live with. When the sun is setting the light shining into an orange room can turn a gorgeous golden color, which can seem magical. Orange creates a nurturing feeling, a sense of safety and protection. These feelings can create wonderful, cherished memories.
